Hundreds of people from a mid Cornwall village were forced out of their homes around teatime on Thursday 25 October, following a fire involving gas cylinders in a shed at St Blazey Gate near St Austell. Hear our interviews with local people.

The village of St Blazey Gate was like a ghost town on Friday 26 October 2007.

Thousands of cars usually pass through the mid Cornwall village, but after a fire involving gas cylinders in a nearby shed on Thursday 25 October, many villagers were evacuated and the road closed off.

Road closure at St Blazey Gate

A 200m (656ft) exclusion zone was set up. It was still in operation well into Friday. The area was cordoned off by the emergency services, police and firefighters.

The village has a variety of shops, including a fish and chip establishment, chinese takeaway and bridal shop. All of these businesses were experiencing a quieter day due to the main road closure.

Michael Kinsella was evacuated on Thursday

During the day on Friday the Newquay to Par branch line remained shut and the main A-390 road was closed. The latter is usually an extremely busy road carrying traffic between Plymouth and St Austell. Throughout Thursday night and most of Friday there were no cars on that road.

By the end of the day the 350 residents were hoping to be back in their homes.
