Ban the Bag

Saltash Environmental Action (SEA)听has been awarded a 拢1600 loan by Saltash Town Council to purchase fabric bags as part of its drive to make Saltash plastic bag free.

The Exectuive Committee decided to loan the funds to the group who will purchase 500 cotton bags and 250 jute bags for resale to traders and shoppers in the town.

The design of the first edition of bags is currently being finalised by local eco-designers. The Saltash bags will be launched in September, as there is so much demand at present for fabric bags that the printing time has been extended.听

鈥淲e are very grateful for the generosity and support from Saltash Town Council,鈥 said Marianne Beale, chair of SEA.听 鈥淚t will enable us to make a start and get the orders for the bags underway in time for the end of the school holidays.

鈥淲e have decided on two different designs 鈥 one is a large cotton bag that can be stuffed in a pocket or handbag, whilst the other is a more sturdy jute design which will stand up on its own and can carry heavy shopping or bulky items. We hope they will appeal to everyone.鈥

Arrangements for the sales of the bags are also being finalised as traders will be invited to resell them. Bob Austin, Mayor of Saltash and other SEA members will be meeting with traders next week to discuss how to take the plans forward.
