Barry Sanderson getting his awards

Barry Sanderson gets his award

Over 30 former homeless people in Cornwall received awards after gaining valuable skills and qualifications. Most of them lived rough until a Camborne-based charity, The New Connection, gave them emergency accommodation.

During the past six months the students have all gained qualifications, and received their awards at a special ceremony held in Camborne.

Aged between 20 to 60 the clients have been attending classes in adult numeracy and literacy, food hygiene stone carving, digital video production, art, design and many more classes which provide valuable life skills.

The New Connection

Former homeless client Barry Sanderson says: "Back in January I was sleeping rough and was very depressed. If it wasn't for The New Connection offering me crisis accomodation I don't know what would have happened to me. I'm so happy to have got my qualifications and a place to live. My life's been turned around."

Unlike many learning initiatives, much of the training has been offered at the New Connection Day Centre, so clients have not hadÌý to go to college, which in itself can be quite daunting.

Co-ordinator Jody Ticehurst, says: "We're now half-way through the initial three-year programme. Success has become infectious over the past few months, and the "exam in progress" sign has been a regular feature at the centre. Several clients have gained more than one qualification, with one individual due to pick up six certificates.

"One group has even made a film, which will have its first showing at the ceremony. As all our award winners have been homeless, and the majority had no qualifications at all, this is a terrific achievement."

The New Connection is a division of Coastline Housing and has over ten years’ experience helping the single homeless in Cornwall. Based in Camborne, the organisation has a range of projects across county, and offers crisis accommodation to around 500 people every year.
