Olly Hicks Returns

Record breaking rower Olly Hicks is hoping to become the first person to row solo around the world. Prince William was among the people to welcome Olly back to Falmouth after his row from America. Hear our interview.

Hundreds of people gathered at Events Square in Falmouth in October 2005 to welcome back a young record breaker.

Olly Hicks hit the headlines after becoming the youngest person to row solo from America to Britain, completing his crossing at the Isles of Scilly.

When he arrived back in Falmouth, Prince William and Richard Branson were among those waiting to welcome him back on dry land.

Olly will be travelling along the line of 50 degrees south latitude - through some of the most dangerous seas on the planet.

He plans to set off on his Virgin Global Row from Wellington, New Zealand, in
the New Year, travel around the bottom of the world past Cape Horn and return to
Wellington.

The 拢550,000 expedition's boat, a new design by marine designer Phil Morrison,
will be built like 'the proverbial brick outhouse' said Mr Hicks.

The boat will carry dehydrated rations and an emergency supply of 50 litres of water, as well as several 'desalinators' to make fresh water. There will also be eight cameras on board to record wildlife Olly sees on his marathon voyage.

The global rower will also be working to raise awareness of climate change and global warming, showing that it is possible to live off alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power.

"In the course of the expedition I will be taking daily meteorological readings and sending these back directly to my shore team who will make them available to any interested bodies or scientists,"听 Olly said.

The 15,000 miles solo trip could take up to two years to complete.
