Thrusters DiaryYou are in: Cornwall > Surfing & extreme sports > Thrusters Diary > Tips for Beginners Thruster demonstrates how to rip Tips for BeginnersThruster I've never really considered that it was within my scope to give anyone guidelines on how to surf, but it has recently been brought to my attention that a lot of beginners are, in fact, a little intimidated by my ability in the ocean. Facts about ThrusterThruster didn't take up surfing until he was 19, but soon became hooked and was determined to let neither a late start, nor a remarkable dearth of natural talent stand in his way. Now aged 38 he still sincerely believes it is only a matter of time before he becomes world champion. Also obsessed with snowboarding, at which he is marginally more impressive (he can stand up), Thruster has been writing surfing and extreme sports articles for 12 years. His next journalistic challenge is to write a good one. 91热爆 Break: Gwithian Surf Trips: Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Philippines, Fiji, Indonesia, NZ, Hawaii, Australia, South Africa, Canaries, Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland. Surfers' Ear Operations: 3 (but needs another) Would love to live in: Galicia Board: 6'4" x 18 戮 rounded pin (and a 7'4" log when really desperate) Standard: Easily one of the best in his cul-de-sac. Their astonishment is palpable as they study me in the line-up. How can a man who has surfed for 17 years be that dire?听 Well, it's not without dedication and a meticulous code of practice, I can tell you. To emulate my perpetual uselessness, here are some must-dos. 1. Never surf anywhere other than your home break.听 What鈥檚 the point? And petrol鈥檚 not cheap. 2. Surf exactly the same board for your entire surfing life; a 6鈥4鈥 x 18 戮 squash-tail thruster. 3. When you get out the back, float around on your belly for a good five minutes while you get your breath back. 4. Never paddle for a wave if there鈥檚 anyone good out (risk of humiliation). 5. Never paddle for a wave you might not catch (humiliation), and most certainly never paddle for a wave you might get pitched on (utter humiliation).听 If you do find yourself stroking into a steep one, don't rush the take-off.听 Much better to have a cruisy little ride on the white-water than risk getting pitched just to make that over-rated 鈥渂lue鈥 section. 6. Never paddle for a wave if it鈥檚 a left听 (high risk of humiliation)! 7. When on a wave, never try a move you鈥檙e not 100% certain you鈥檙e going to make.听 Falling off is a humiliation.听 Try and steer as straight a course as possible.听 Turning is the domain of the big-head. 8. Have as many surf related operations as possible Good luck. Thrusterlast updated: 28/06/07 You are in: Cornwall > Surfing & extreme sports > Thrusters Diary > Tips for Beginners
