About CornwallYou are in: Cornwall > About Cornwall > About Cornwall > Golowan Festival Golowan FestivalBack for its seventeenth year, the theme of this year's Golowan Festival was 'Inventions' and the children from nineteen different Primary Schools had certainly been busy beavering away to create one of the most spectacular parades to date. Colour and music filled the streets of Penzance during Mazey day this year with some spectacular inventions making their way through the streets. 91热爆 Cornwall went along and photographed both the Crowst Parade at 11am and the Crib Parade at 3pm. Take a look at the gallery of photos and see if you can spot yourself or your school:听 Take a look at a gallery of photos from the Boat Race at Wherrytown on Quay Day: A Bit of background on Golowan Festival West Cornwall is one of the few places in the Celtic lands where customs, originally celebrating the summer solstice on the year's longest day, the 21st of June, still survive. Life and colour are brought to Penzance On St John's Eve, June 23rd, midsummer bonfires and beacons blaze on hilltops and carns, maintaining continuity with ancient pagan and Celtic traditions. In 1991, through local archive research and the commitment of a small group of volunteers Golowan was revived and revitalised with new imagery and ritual. One day of celebration has grown into a 10-day festival of Cornish, Celtic, and international culture, culminating in Mazey Day's colourful parades, street entertainment and market stalls, under a canopy of flags, banners and greenery. Music from local bands Most importantly, Penglaz, the Serpent Dance, Summer Fire, Quay Fair, the Mock Mayor Elections and Sea and Sail will always be at the heart of Golowan.
