The National Concert Band Festival attracts the cream of talented musicians each year. This year youngsters from Helston School Jazz Orchestra will be appearing in the grand final on Saturday 31 March. The young orchestra has enjoyed previous success at the event and will be hoping for more accolades this year.

Last year they won their class again which gave them the auspicious title of best school jazz band in Britain. This year they have a new director - Mr Clive King and are keen to repeat last years triumphs. The band was formed from Helston School students in 1989. Only three years later they gained a Silver Award in the finals of the National Championships in Manchester. They achieved a Gold Award in the same competition in 1993 when alto saxophonist Natalie Barber, won the outstanding soloist award. In following years HSJO have won another three Gold Awards in the B&H Finals in Manchester.

Past band members Poppy Gillow and Tom Butcher have also won the award for outstanding soloists at the National Championships. Band percussionist Calie Hough has now won the outstanding soloist award an unprecedented three times, the third time at the 2006 finals of the Concert Band Festival held in Glasgow. The band have also been featured on 91热爆 Radio Cornwall several times, and on Channel 4's Big Breakfast Show. For more information visit the school's website:
