The power of the Cornish landscape has influenced writers for centuries and, of course, it still does. But everyone has a different view, an individual perception of what the landscape is, and we鈥檙e all affected by it in different ways. The Writing Centre is running a competition that aims to encourage everyone, from professional authors to schoolchildren, to write about their personal piece of Cornish landscape. Your piece could be the dramatic sea-lashed cliffs at Rinsey, the windswept wilderness of Bodmin Moor or crowded summer beaches at Perranporth; it might be a perfect wave rolling in at Fistral Bay, the eerie solitude of Truro railway station on a cold winter鈥檚 evening, or even the waste ground behind your house. Whatever landscape you pick is up to you, but the judges will be looking for an original and powerful piece of prose that encapsulates your particular and personal view of our county鈥檚 landscape. Run in conjunction with Cornwall Today and 91热爆 Radio Cornwall, the competition is open to all, whether you鈥檙e a famous novelist or just fancy having a go. It must be about the contemporary Cornish landscape, must be original and must be in the form of a written text. It could be a short story or a piece of non-fiction, but it must be no longer than 500 words and printed out on a single sheet of A4 paper. A shortlist of the best entries will be drawn up by The Writing Centre, to be judged by a prestigious panel including author Patrick Gale. The winning and second-place entries and the best two entries in our under-16 category will win terrific prizes, be published in Cornwall Today and read out on 91热爆 Radio Cornwall. Entry deadline is on or before June 30, 2007.
