It all began in 1907 with an experimental camp on Brownsea Island. We take a look back at Scouting. Scouting was founded by Robert Baden-Powell 100 years ago. Lord Baden-Powell It all started with an experimental camp in 1907 on Brownsea Island, for 20 boys from a variety of backgrounds, where Baden-Powell tried out his ideas. The camp proved to be a great success. Soon after Baden-Powell started to publish 'Scouting for Boys'. This was a magazine which came out every two weeks, at the cost of four pence per issue. Baden-Powell had only intended to provide a method of training boys. But such was the enthusiasm towards his magazines, that youngsters started to organise themselves into what was destined to become the world's largest voluntary youth movement. Since that first World Jamboree at Olympia in London, there have been 17 others at different locations. A century later, there are believed to be 28 million Scouts in nearly every country of the world. Here in Cornwall there are 3,000 Scouts with 650 adults involved in the running of the meetings. The Scouts take part in several different activities in Cornwall.
