British
music is dead. I can say that with absolute unwavering confidence.
Every time I turn on the radio I feel as though IÂ’m being suffocated
by a raft of brain-dead melodies and lifeless lyrics – worse
still, each combination of exploitative nonsense sounds exactly
as the hopeless carnation that preceded it. I cannot begin to comprehend
how this became known as ‘popular music’. We need a breath
of fresh air and I have a feeling weÂ’re about to get more fresh
air than a walk in a deserted, carbon-dioxide proof meadow.
I am,
of course, referring to Alex Parks, the Cornish clown that recently
won hit television show Fame Academy. ItÂ’s only every so often
in the music industry that you hear a voice that truly captures
you, moves you, and makes you want to leap up and dance. But when
I turned on the television one night, I heard a voice that did all
three. Clearly I wasnÂ’t the only one, the public voted in their
thousands to ensure Ms Parks got her well deserved recognition.
The
public has taken to her like a duck to water. Looking out on this
cold winter morning I can see girls breezily walking along with
AlexÂ’s brand of haircut, sporting sweatbands and surfing trainers
without a Cornish coast in sight.

Finally,
weÂ’re not afraid to release tracks that arenÂ’t about some
romantic fantasy or your ‘homies’.
In the stead of gangster rap and samey pop we have bands like Coldplay
and artists like Alex, singing about things everyone can relate
to. Originality, ladies and gentlemen, is back in fashion.
We
can only hope that through it all, Alex ParksÂ’ innocence will
shine through, and she will remain unique.
