Andrew's book 'The American Boy', was recently featured as a Richard & Judy choice. Andrew Kelly, director of Brunel 200 says he was the "perfect choice". "He has a feel for the Victorian period and – most important of all – he is a brilliant writer," he added. This project is one of 30 supported by Brunel 200 in celebration of the engineer's life, scheduled to run throughout 2006. Others include: • David White, a photographer who has worked for Marie Clare, will recreate the camera with which Robert Howlett took a classic photograph of Brunel, to take 20 shots of Brunel projects now. • The Hotwells' Community Association will launch a competition to find a new use for the stovepipe hat. • Luke Jerram, a NESTA fellow, will recreate the sound of Brunel's atmospheric train in a disused tunnel in Bristol. • Nick Hand will interview and photograph representatives of all the companies that have Brunel in their name today, like Brunel's Buttery, a sandwich bar. These are joined by projects at Temple Meads, including a massive mural of Brunel's life and work, and projects on trains between Bristol and London. "I've long admired the work of Brunel and his contemporaries," said Andrew Taylor. "The period offers fertile ground for fiction. It's exciting being part of a large project." Andrew Taylor's story will be published here on the web in the week beginning 6 March 2006 and will be published in book form on 16 March. |
