On air: Is legalising drugs the way to stop the carnage in Mexico?

Mexico's drug war has claimed 28000 victims since 2006. July 2010 was the deadliest month yet, with 1,234 killed. 84,000 weapons have been confiscated in that time by the security forces. Yet, the cartels are still thriving.
In a change of heart, President Felipe Calderon said on Wednesday that he would on the legalisation of drugs, despite his long-running opposition to it.
Several said last year that Latin American countries should consider legalisation as a new way of fighting the cartels.
But is this the best way to tackle the drugs war? Will legalising drugs stop the carnage in Mexico?
