Reaction to Saddam's execution
Today we talked about the execution of Saddam Hussein - you can read some of the emails and text messages that came in during the programme here, and of course post your own comments to join the debate.
Innocent in Lusaka, Zambia
The late Saddam's death is a warning to the rest - I mean the surving dictators especially those in Africa who have set out laws to trap only the poor.
Ryan in Northern Virginia
The execution of Saddam came too early. The crime for which he was tried was only one of the many atrocities he committed, the Iraqi government should have continued to prosecute cases against him to demonstrate just how murderous he was towards all Iraqis, not just the Shia, and then perhaps better steps towards reconciliation could have been taken.
Anthony in Accrington, Lancashire UK
Saddam Hussein deserved to be executed because he executed people who spoke out against him and his government, is this the right course of action, to kill your opponents for speaking out against you or government? it doesn't happen elsewhere in the world.
Mansour of Monrovia
Saddam got what he deserved and this will serve as a lesson to all African dictators.
Habeeb from Ilorin in Nigeria
Killing of Saddam marks the begining of more violence in Iraq and I am sure USA will pay for it.
Mahmoud in Accra
The killing of saddam on an important day such as Eid is a manifestation of the fact that his execution is more of a revenge than justice.
Kiru in Jamaica
This execution was illegal and immoral. Crass and crude. This government is no better than Saddam himself.
Mustafa in Kuwait
Saddam's execution on a Eid is like executing a Christian on Christmas.
Tom in UK
Please remember Saddam executed many on Eid and the Saudis still do today. Never heard anyone complain until today.
Karta Yu Tema, Ghana
During the Iran-Iraq war they killed many enemies on Eid. So anything can happen on that day and Saddam Hussein was known to taunt people before he executed them. Mostly with videos of executions.
Tim, Kent, England
I was interested to hear your first caller, Subriya, state that she was shocked by Saddam's execution during Eid because it is a holy month in which 'no Muslim would consider shedding blood'. I notice that this doesn't seem to apply to the devout Muslims in the insurgency in Iraq, who on the same day as the execution blew up thirty of their fellow Muslim Iraqis (civilians) in Kufa, Southern Iraq; or, indeed, to the late Mr Hussein himself, who apparently executed lots of people himself during Eid.
Ali from Yemen
Saddam his execution is humaliating for an Arab leader. I consider it a sectarian act.
Bill in Johanesburg
Are Muslims fussy about when they chop off european heads?
Kamal, Yemen
Saddam has been assassinated by the Shiites and the USA and he's going to be an ideal for us in the Arab countries. The day of assassination is easy to remember. Thanks for that timing.
Taruvinga Chikore in Zimbabwe
Saddam caused deaths of more than 20,000 people. What's so special about his life. His execution was perfect. Take note Mugabe.
Jacky in Ghana
Saddam is not above the law, after all Sharia was not made for the less privileged.
Mwenda in Zambia
It's very unfortunate that Saddam died a sinner, the death penalty should be abolished globaly. Criminals deserve a chance to repent.
Edward in Monrovia, Liberia
The hasty verdict and execution of Saddan Hussein leaves more questions than answers. I hope the violence is not exacerbated.
Simon in Firenze, Italia
Please, enough of Saddam Hussein, he was dead the moment the Americans captured him. We knew it as did he, and he was executed at the beginning of Ede to send a message to Muslims. So please enough of this "objective" reporting. We have destroyed Iraq for the benefit of an idiot American president and his oil company friends. Perhaps we should try and help the Iraqis. As the US has discovered democracy is the will of the people not always what you consider convenient.
George in Providence, Rhode Island, USA
Saddam was a Hitler of the Arab world. If Jews were at the hanging of Hitler and they had shouted "you are going to hell!" would we have been so critical? All these criticisms are asking for perfect justice for Hussein, while he gave no justice to the hundreds of thousands he butchered. He got more than enough of a chance to spout off in court (too much, I thought) self-righteously over a prolonged period of time. Would he have done the same for an American leader or a Shi'ite one or a Kurdish one? I am Catholic and follow the teachings of the church, including opposing capital punishment under most circumstances. Saddam was an exception, as Idi Amin, Pol Pot and Stalin would have been. God save us all from any more of their ilk!
Vishan
I'm a buddhist from Sri Lanka and according to my religion no one should be punished or executed for whatever sin they have commited unless they are given a kind of punishment which will punish their memories.
Umar in Kano - Nigeria
Iraqis should be thinking on how to stop the on going killings. Hanging of tens of Saddams would not heal those hurt.
El Naseer in Akwa-Ibom, Nigeria
The execution of Saddam is in the interest of the American government not for the Iraqis or the other rest of the world.
S. K. Duworko in Liberia
The execution of Saddam will make Iraq more violent and threaten the lives of innocent Americans. I'm afraid that killing Saddam makes him a matyr.
Idris in Nigeria
Saddam's hasty execution is unfair, he should have being given more to defend himself.
Text from Lusaka
No matter how he ruled it cant b overlooked that Saddam died praying the kalima, for any suni that is enough to be hopeful for his forgiveness
Duut Dickson in Accra, Ghana
Execution of Saddam by hanging is cruel and barbaric at this modern era. the security advisor liar to the world that they went through all the international observation and procedures, the video pictures on the phone shows that the man was subjected to so many ordeal before hang. This is more of revenge than justics.
N in Detroit
To those protesting Saddam's execution, I say, enough already. All this about one individual's death. Meanwhile thousands of innocents dying in various conflicts around the world every day. Aren't the rapes and deaths of innocents around the world 'ugly and degrading'?
Kalypso from Austria
I think executing Saddam will make things worse and not better. It will not bring stability, but on the contrary. America has only done terrible things in Iraq. If they think, it's right to kill Saddam, then what about George Bush? Didn't he commit much more terrile crimes? didn't his administration kill much more people than Saddam?
Gerry, Berlin
Saddam Hussein was evil but he is relatively smalltime and a scapegoat for the big western players who have killed even more people in Iraq and elsewhere.
Stan, Cleveland, OH
It wasn't gangster justice, he had a judicious trial, in which defenders and prosecutors risked and lost their lives to give him a hearing. Sadaam was a murderous dictator who got what he deserved. The judgment was rendered and there was no reason to delay. The timing with a holiday was just coincidental. More trial about more of his murders would have been moot. I object to the woman caller who said it was offensive to Muslims. I've never heard of Muslims being offended by Sadaam's crimes, the terrorist acts of Hamas, etc or the honor killing of Muslim women by their husbands or relatives.
Mike in Memphis, TN, USA
Andrew Jackson killed thousands of Indians and is on the US $20 note - when will we depose our own tribe's Saddams?
Susan in Cleveland, OH
However he was executed is a moot point, isn't it, since he is dead and gone. If people focus on rehashing the event, then they waste energy that could be put where it belongs... healing the situation and those hurt by it. This is the general madness of our species! Let's move on to things that matter.
Des, Ann Arbor, Michigan
Saddam should have been sent to the Hague.
