Bearders made scoring an art form

The vast number of tributes which have flooded into the 91Èȱ¬ following the sad news of Bill's death is testament to the relationship he fostered with the listeners of .

There are in-depth tributes written elsewhere on this site, so I will keep this brief and say rest in peace Bill. You made scoring an art form, and will be remembered as a legend.

As the youngest member of the 91Èȱ¬ cricket team, I listened to Bill on the radio for many more years than I worked with him, but I feel lucky to have overlapped at least a few years with the Bearded Wonder.

Tribute to the Bearded Wonder

Bill Frindall spent his working life chronicling the achievements of some of the greats of the cricketing world.

But although debates rage about whether Lara was a better batsman than Tendulkar or Warne a better bowler than Muralitharan, in the field of cricket scoring there is no doubt about who is the number one.

Dubbed "the Bearded Wonder" by , Bill scored 377 Test Matches since making his Test Match Special debut in 1966 and was the longest serving member of the TMS team.

TMS team heads for the sun

When Test Match Special was last broadcast just before Christmas, I doubt many of us thought England's series against the just over a month later would see a new captain leading the side and no full-time coach to help behind the scenes.

It's funny how the wheel of cricketing fortune turns. Just three months ago, the was sitting with us in the 91Èȱ¬ commentary box in Antigua working on our coverage of the Stanford Super Series.

During the , I remember Strauss telling us he was glad not to be in Kevin Pietersen's shoes that night. Well now he is!
