Congratulations, Springers!

Blimey. Last night, live on air, Martin Hughes-Games threw down the gauntlet and challenged viewers to not just watch the programme but to contribute to it. And boy did you accept the challenge...

"Britain's strangest nest sites," he said. "Have you got a bird that's nesting in a wellington boot, a kettle or an outside loo? Last year Simon and I, up on Islay, found a bird nesting in a tractor that was being used. So if you've got a strange nest site let us know." (You can watch last night's episode again on iPlayer. Martin's appeal is made 39 minutes in)

Even before the programme ended people all over the country were going to the Springwatch homepage, clicking on "Your Movies", and using the "Upload your best nature movies" button to post their home-movies of strange nesting sites. Not even 24 hours later, you have sent in more than 60 clips for everyone to watch, including this wonderful one of great tits nesting in a jar.

But that's nothing compared to the number of comments made in response to Martin's written post "Tell us about strange nests". So far there have been over 170 responses including one that contained this shot of a bird nesting in a pub ashtray!

And if you thought that was a lot then feel free to take a trip to the where viewers have now posted more than a thousand photos since this time yesterday. Of course they aren't all about strange bird nesting sites but then that's the point. We want you to contribute whatever you think will interest your fellow Springwatch enthusiast. And remember, the programme is live and fluid so your contributions may well influence - and appear in - the content of each episode.

But nothing quite matches the activity on the Messageboards. There have literally been thousands of messages posted on every possible topic: painted ladies, birds of prey, goldfinches, polecats in Pembrokeshire, and - of course - strange nesting sites.

And if you think the number of postings on the message board is amazing - and it is - then check out the comments posted on The Mole's blogs. I literally have almost ten...

I may have to do something about this Martin Hughes-Games character...
