This idea of going straight to dentures is not new. I remember that my grandmother had all her teeth removed as a 21st birthday present! This was something to aspire to in the early part of the 20th century apparently.

In the history of dentistry, stripping out the teeth seems to have been the pre-war version of the brace, its victims the "Ugly Bettys" of their day.

There's a poem about the straight-to-dentures option in Vicki Feaver's prize-winning Book of Blood (2006). Titled: The woman who talked to her teeth, it begins:

She'd had her teeth out in her teens.
    Lots of girls did it.
    Dentists were expensive:
you got fitted with a false set
    before marriage and kids.

The woman never finds the hoped for partner and lives alone talking to the teeth in lieu of the kids she might have had.

    Not laughing now, eh?
