We saw some proof that our MPs aren't all sunning themselves or doing voluntary work last week when Nick Brown chose to intervene in the Newcastle United saga.

The Newcastle MP and Minister for the North East called on the on the eve of United's first match in the Championship.

It was an intervention that was picked up .

Personally though, I always feel a little uncomfortable when our politicians dabble in popular culture.

I can remember cringing when exit from the programme in Parliament.

And when mental health, you just couldn't help wondering whether there was something better he could have been doing.

So, are Nick Brown's comments just another way of trying to muscle into a publicity-rich arena where a politician has no place to tread?

Well, possibly. Mr Brown's Newcastle East seat is vulnerable to the Lib Dems after all.

But, Newcastle United is more than just a football club in the city. For many it's a religion.

And of course it is a big economic player.

It can generate income and positive publicity when doing well, so it may also drag the city down with its current travails.

That does make it's fortunes a legitimate concern for any politician representing the city.

And perhaps we should also encourage our MPs to talk about the issues that their constituents are also talking about.

But I'm not sure Mr Brown's intervention will make any difference.

Well, unless he wants to buy the club. But I'm not sure an MP's expenses - however generous - would run to the current asking price.
