Stand-in

Sequin | 12:44 UK time, Monday, 29 October 2007

You know how much I love doing PM and filling in for Eddie. We've drunk the cocktail cabinet dry, eaten all his chocolates and taken the keys to the blog and crashed it. I haven't touched his bottle of Japanese Diet Coke yet - but heck. I've still got a week to go....

Today, however, we are having to look like we're doing some serious work because we have a film crew following us around. BlogPrince says he'll try to snap them in action and post it later.

They're doing a film for the 91Èȱ¬'s College of Journalism about "Being a stand-in presenter". Yours truly has to explain how to fit into EM's unique way of doing things without upsetting the apple cart.

I've written this blog while the crew have gone off to lunch.

The crew have returned from lunch, and in this photo you can see the cameraman filming the PM team in action. CQ is to the right in the fetching green cardi. Opposite her, by the window is the PM number 2, Amanda. She's at the beck and call of the man to her right, Roger, who is editing this evening's programme. He's famed in the office for his half-hearted impressions of Rodin's "Thinker".

    Sequin,

Bei mir, you're the best possible stand-in, and seem to truly enter into the unique spirit of the programme/cult. Any chance of an occasional (or permanent?) double-act? Not in these times of financial constraint, I suspect.

Probably it'll be an exemplary film for the budding journos. Stand-in AND cross-platform!

quit When the quit statement is read, the bc processor is terminated, regardless of where the quit statement is found. For example, "if (0 == 1) quit" will cause bc to terminate.
(Seen in the manpage for "bc". Note the "if" statement's logic)

    Huh?

It did tend to cause havoc with the the old studer tape machines at LBC in the 'old days' I recall - wrapping itself around the guide rollers and sticking to splicing tape etc... thank goodness technology has moved on.

Sequin looks at peace with her fetching green number - clashing a little with 'Roger the red'!

I hope the 91Èȱ¬'s College of Journo's stick the finished production on 'YouTube' for us all to have a look.

Whatever it is, it's a bizarre item to find in a newsroom.Great pic though NBP. Thanks for "sneaking" for us. Will there be copyright issues? And did you have to ask the crew's permission to photograph them? Isn't life complicated these days?

Who else heard that bizarre pedant's pedant on the Today Prog this a. m.? Wasn't he deadly boring? I hope you got to hear it Carolyn. I'm sure it's what all presenters need - someone in an office checking your every phrase for grammatical correctness, & giving you "notes" after the show.

Someone email Eddie & tell him it's an "improvement" that's just been introduced while he's away. Just for the hell of it. You should be able to hear his reaction from the office.

A long-term association between global temperature and biodiversity, origination

Abstract: We found that global biodiversity (the richness of families and genera) is related to temperature and has been relatively low during warm 'greenhouse' phases, while during the same phases extinction and origination rates of taxonomic lineages have been relatively high. These findings are consistent for terrestrial and marine environments and are robust to a number of alternative assumptions and potential biases. Our results provide the first clear evidence that global climate may explain substantial variation in the fossil record in a simple and consistent manner. Our findings may have implications for extinction and biodiversity change under future climate warming.

You are transported to a room where you are faced by a wizard who
points to you and says, "Them's fighting words!" You immediately get
attacked by all sorts of denizens of the museum: there is a cobra
chewing on your leg, a troglodyte is bashing your brains out with a
gold nugget, a crocodile is removing large chunks of flesh from you, a
rhinoceros is goring you with his horn, a sabre-tooth cat is busy
trying to disembowel you, you are being trampled by a large mammoth, a
vampire is sucking you dry, a Tyranosaurus Rex is sinking his six inch
long fangs into various parts of your anatomy, a large bear is
dismembering your body, a gargoyle is bouncing up and down on your
head, a burly troll is tearing you limb from limb, several dire wolves
are making mince meat out of your torso, and the wizard is about to
transport you to the corner of Westwood and Broxton. Oh dear, you seem
to have gotten yourself killed, as well.

You scored 0 out of 250 possible points.
That gives you a ranking of junior beginning adventurer.
To achieve the next higher rating, you need to score 32 more points.

Big Sis's link has somehow got chewed up and doesn't work, so here's three possible ways to drag up the photo of Rupert with the headdress:

    1) The long-winded way. Click on the 'Photos' link, scroll until you're fairly near the bottom - it was posted during the first week of the month.

    2) Try clicking on this link here.

    3) Or try this link which takes you directly to the photo.

    4) If (3) doesn't work, copy/paste this: www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/pm/images/rupert.JPG
(Don't forget JPG is in capitals!).

Meanwhile, other things to spot in the photo:

    The all-important fire alarm
A computer with a foot floating in mid-air
A display board filled with pictures
A phone with a scary amount of direct dial buttons
Still working out what's behind the cameraman (from our POV) - TV screens and some kind of organiser board?
