Hurrah

Eddie Mair | 09:39 UK time, Tuesday, 26 June 2007

After a day of tiresome blockages during which I felt strangely disconnected, the Blog appears to be working OK. Stand by for various things - including snaps from Hugh in Honkers (as I'm not allowed to call it on air).

Does this mean Hugh has moved into a safer zone? That's very good news for us and for his family back here in Blighty.

Just been listening to Eric's understudy(!)Jonathan talking about Hong Kong ten years on so I'm looking forward hugely to his photos. Never having been to Hong Kong myself, my own pictures of that place were hugely influenced by the book and film 'A Many Splendoured Thing'. In the Dimbleby programme he spoke of the view from the hill behind the city, which was what brought Han Suyin and her book back to mind. If she's still alive, she'll be about 90 now.

Now see, where I come from, honkers are things one sits on -- one can't be in them, merely on them. Are you trying to confuse us Eric?

Are honkers the same thing as hooters?

Strange, it was always Honkers to the Navy. Why is it forbidden? Are there strange connotations to the derivation? Is it offensive in the Kazakh language? Is this political correctness gone mad?

Ap (2) - I think that you sit on your hunkers.

When a honker is not a big nose or a swan or a goose or a horn-blarer it is something that comes in pairs and that 50% of the adult population has and I don't.

RJD - I rather think we make up slightly more than 50%? Though that's just from memory and I'll stand corrected if it has changed recently.

Nope, Si, honkers are not the same things as hooters. I happen to be very bendy but I have never been able to sit on my hooters. That would be some circus act!

And, nope, RJD, I did not mean "hunkers" -- that sounds American to me.

Sitting on ones honkers involves crouching without bending forwards. Honkers are a bit like laps -- they only exist when one is in the right position.

And, by the way, one can't sit on someone else's honkers, because, if the other person were sitting in the right position to have honkers, it would mean that their honkers were already taken.

    Here endeth the lesson :-)

Has anyone tried the sitting-in-a-circle exercise where each sits on someone else's lap all the way round the circle?

A bit like a reciprocal roof.

Malicious? it is malicious to break the circle!

    Ap (6) From the OED

Hunker (verb) 1 Squat or crouch down low. 2 (hunker down) approach a task seriously - ORIGIN probably related to the German hocken

Hunkers (plural noun) informal - a person's haunches - ORIGIN from hunker

"Sitting on your hunkers" is a phrase I've known all my llife. But never sitting on my "honkers". Must be an arcane usage from your neck of the woods!

I agree with Si - Honkers are hooters.

Malicious - slightly naughty maybe but hardly malicious! (twice)

Val (5) - You are correct.

    at birth: 1.05 male(s)/female
    under 15 years: 1.05 male(s)/female
    15-64 years: 1.02 male(s)/female
    65 years and over: 0.75 male(s)/female
    total population: 0.98 male(s)/female (2006 est.)

That equates to about 50.5% female, 49.5% male overall.

The most interesting thing is that women live longer than men. This is probably because in most cases they don’t live with a woman. I'm just off to the Beach to hide in the dunes. . . . .

I actually find being on my honkers very comfortable. Ands am still supple enough toget of them without the aid of furnature!

Gastrocnemius, I believe. The big muscle forming the calf? Or something close to that. SO is a physio, some of it sticks, after a while. But then so does ordure, if thrown with enough force.
