Conference news

Martin Rosenbaum | 14:48 UK time, Tuesday, 25 September 2007

The cost of policing last year's Labour conference in Manchester was around £4 million.

Following a freedom of information request from the 91Èȱ¬, Greater Manchester Police has revealed that it spent £3,983,300 on covering the event. The force adds that these costs are funded from a 91Èȱ¬ Office special grant.

As for this year's conference, Gordon Brown made one reference to freedom of information in his yesterday, in this passage:

"I have no doubt that the best answer to disengagement from our democracy is to renew our democracy. And that means more change ... change to strengthen our liberties to uphold the freedom of speech, freedom of information and the freedom to protest."

"You, all of you, have got to play your part - the trade unions and the socialist societies, and all those in the community at large who share our values and who know that a Labour government matters." Jack Dromey

This is good news for those who don't necessarily want to "join up" with any particular association. We've got to be careful about who we "click" with these days, for reasons of personal data control and also to avoid any "viral storms" which may be in the offing.

Its warming to learn how my tax money is being spent. How much time did each of us spend working to pay for this? The labor conference has benefited me as much as the advice from a suicidal lemming.

I'm not happy seeing my money dissapear to the tax man at the best of times. I can't understand why the vast majority of Brits don't take exception to this as I do.
