Avoidance strategy

Nick Robinson | 17:53 UK time, Thursday, 6 December 2007

Remember I said that Labour's secret donor David Abrahams was staying silent? Not so. He can't - it seems - quite resist. In an interview with the he's warned the government that he will come out fighting if ministers start "hammering" him.

What's more he has finally spoken about one issue that up until now people have only dared to whisper about - the fact he's Jewish. The property developer says that he gave his donations in secret to avoid accusations of being part of a "Jewish conspiracy". Ironically, this was precisely the implication of the Telegraph's front page the other day which - let's just say - has yet to produce any supporting evidence (see old blog post).

Abrahams maintains that all his money has been "earned legitimately" through hard work and that none of it has come from Israel, as has been alleged.

I've no time for all these outrageous Jewish conspiracies. But people like Abrahams don't help by highlighting the fact that that's what he wanted to avoid.

Abrahams is painting himself as a victim in all this but let's not forget that he used at least one woman's name without her consent.

He also used another woman to pose as his "wife" to try and gain Labour backing for a parliamentary seat.

No doubt he'll try and use his new-found fame to stand as an MP somewhere in the next election. But, of course, he'll have to go on Celebrity Big Brother first.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Abrahams knows something that could be incredibly damaging to Labour?

It just appears that not everything has come to light in regards to these donations yet...

Doesn't it strike you as odd, Nick, that someone who was so desperate to hide his identity that he made his donations through third parties, now seems to have verbal diahorrea..?

The personality type, regime, and community difficulties of modern Britain are similar to what gave rise to Nazi Germany but the dynamic has an opposite positive spin. So, when people rave about an authoritarian Prime Minister, a control freak government, and Muslim extremists and the Jewish mafia, I don't take it too seriously. It's just my gut feeling but, I think, we've all looked over the precipice and seen where that heads, and are turning in a better direction.

Truth, tolerance, and patience tend to fall from the lips when the going is easy but the measure of any man is how they approach life when things are going badly. The social and economic liberals have had the whip hand and are beginning to kick a little as the historical norms of order, harmony, and capital accumulation begin to assert themselves. Like many, David Abrahams is living in the past but beginning to embrace the reality today. And it's not so bad is it, David?

David Abrahams has come over as a bit of a nervous oddball but by better appreciating his contribution and consideration for society, I think, he may come to develop the opportunity in this disaster. Indeed, by stepping out from behind the wall of silence he may find he is an encouragement for others who wish to achieve and play an active role in politics without fear or shame. After all, what's wrong with being an industrialist with a conscience?

Labour really shouldn't use him as a scapegoat - they'll have to find someone with no access to the media instead.

Maybe blame the whole donation scandal on a junior worker, that seems quite popular these days.

I am intrigued that Mr Abrahams who has recently hired a media representative is reportedly embroiled in disagreeing with The Jewish Chronicle exactly what he said.

Perhaps he did mis-speak and regrets it? The seeming threat to the Labour Party that he may actually tell a different story if he is pushed suggests that we are not being told the real story yet.

Mis-speaking? You do not think the truth actually slipped out in his interview with the Chronicle? That would never do - would it?

David Abrahams says he wasn't interviewed by the Jewish Chronicle and that he has consistently turned down their requests for an interview.

As I said some days ago. Anti-semitism is a nasty little affliction that has always lurked just below the surface in the British media. Abrahams, clearly seeing that our newspapers, particularly the Telegraph and the Mail, can spot a non-existent jewish conspiracy quicker than Hitler, made donations to Labour anonymously. It's a great shame that the very innuendoes he sought to avoid have blown up in his face.

..not really surprising that David Abrahams feels worried about anti-semitism. It always lurks just below the surface of the British media. There are journalists who can spot a non-existent jewish conspiracy quicker than Hitler. Abrahams says he was worried that his donations might be taken to be evidence of such a conspiracy. It's a shame that as soon as Dave Snooty and his pals got hold of the story, the innuendoes he'd hoped to avoid blew up in his face.

The problem now is... no matter how many inquiries there are no one will believe a word that anyone says because they are up to their neck in sleaze, even what Mr Abrahams says, or any other donor for that matter, simply because the game is out and it'll all be either Mud slinging or 'not my fault gov'.

Who would and could you believe, especially when you have recipients in charge.

Lets all hibernate til this lots voted out, mind you we might miss some good jibes from Vince.
