Hillary Benn for Deputy?
- 25 Oct 06, 04:54 PM
Veteran Labour types will be rummaging through their lofts tonight in search of their old circa-1981 "Benn for Deputy" badges. For - never let it be said that the Idle Scrawl does not rush straight into print with single-source intelligence about the Labour leadership contest - I have learned that Hilary Benn is set to throw his hat into the ring for the position of Deputy Leader. I have checked with his office and there is "No Comment". At least we can be sure he is not throwing his hat in the ring for leader! They categorically denied that. Mmm.

Deputy Leadership contests tend to be fought between people who know they don't have a snowball's hope of the top job. But then can anyone remember the last time someone went straight from the Treasury to No.10? Curious times indeed!

Dear Newsnight
The bloggings have it! They seem to suggest where the interest lies, 124 posts so far on How to solve Iraq one on Hilary Benn seeking the deputy ship. Now if he was deputy to John Prescott at least it would make him deputy…...
Perhaps Paul you could still tweak the story to raise interest. You didnt commit yourself fully in that while you said deputy leader you didn't necessarily say where at least in the same sentence. so perhaps you could give it an Iraqi flavour? loads of bloggings!!
For example your source might have tipped you the wink that he was about to throw his cap, hat, or what is the thing the colonials wear into the ring but perhaps they ommitted to tell you exactly where? You know how these briefings can be a bit hazy on the detail.
So there could be endless permutations where this could run ...
I can just see it, Hilary Benn the big daddy of Badhdad, ie Big Bad Baghdaddy Benn.
best wishes
