What is Larry King's legacy?

10:31 UK time, Thursday, 16 December 2010

American talk show host Larry King said an emotional "so long" as he concluded his final broadcast of "Larry King Live" on CNN. What influence will he leave on the media?

King wore his trademark red suspenders and was paid tribute by US president Barack Obama, rival news anchors and celebrities.

He became known for giving his interviewees an easy time and for that, some faulted him for blurring the line between hard news and sensationalism. But he was unapologetic about it, describing his show as "infotainment" rather than journalism.

What will Larry King's lasting impression be? What are your memories of his shows? Did you watch his last broadcast?

This debate is now closed. Thank you for your comments.

"Thursday's Larry King Live show marks the end of an era as the American broadcaster hangs up his suspenders after 25 years."

Hangs up his suspenders? I assume you mean braces. Be wary of cutting and pasting from American press releases. Lazy journalism?

  • Comment number 3.

For the greater part of Mr King's career, his shows have been unavailable to most British viewers. So why are you asking us? Can't we talk about topics more relevant to the UK?

  • Comment number 4.

Is this actually relevant in the U.K.? I don't think the citizens of the USA would be very interested if one of our presenters died !
Is this another example of sucking up to Uncle Sam ?

  • Comment number 5.

I am aware that Americanisms are taking over England but I still find it hysterical to imagine Larry King wearing suspenders, as mentioned in the introoduction to this HYS.

  • Comment number 6.

I wonder if a US news site would run a debate if a UK broadcaster was retiring ? Hmm, let me think....

What will Larry King's lasting impression be? Stupid people.

The lasting impression is of an interviewer who was more interested in what his guest had to say than promoting his own opinions. He gave people the chance to speak and because they were comfortable they told him more than they would have in an adversarial interview. We could also learn from him in our everyday lives. He genuinely listens and responds appropriately.
Look at the talk show hosts that have become the fashion in recent years. You see their eyes light up as the gag they've just thought up is waiting to be blurted out as soon as the interviewy finishes their sentence. Tiresome.
Then we have the interviewers and journalists who feel that they have to offend the person that they are speaking to. There's a way to say things to make a person want to co-operate with you.
This is his lasting impression and his legacy to other interviewers.

absolutely none this side of the pond

Why is this topic on HYS? It has no relevance whatsoever in the UK.

i wonder what the response would be if one of the USA network channels were to ask the merits of Russell Harty ?

  • Comment number 17.

I have absolutely no idea. Never seen him, never heard of him. Is this someone within the 91热爆 picking HYS's on a personal basis? I can only think that someone actually involved with TV production could possibly choose this as a subject for British debate!

He's not dead, just retiring. But, when you see the word 'legacy' it's natural to assume someone has died.

Mind you, when you see the word 'suspenders' it's equally not natural to think of an old man !!

  • Comment number 19.

I agree with most of the comments here I'm afraid 91热爆. Must be a really slow news day for this to be on HYS.
The guy wasn't even that funny, and I've seen some of his stuff.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put something of some relevance to the UK! Oh, and we all know it's going to snow now and know how to react the lovely fluffy white stuff so don't go there tomorrow/saturday either.

Pick your socks up 91热爆, you have been warned!!!

    Yawn.

  • Comment number 21.

It does seem a bit strange putting this item on Have Your Say. It will only spark anti-American, 'what's this got to do with us' comments. The man is a legend in broadcasting, and should be lauded, but that won't happen on this forum.
I'd rather see him than Piers Morgan, that's for sure.

What will Larry King's lasting impression be?

I suppose he could be held accountable (in part) for the sort of day time and evening "chat shows" we've seen on TV. Not that there are very many these days, thank goodness.

  • Comment number 28.

Given that I had never heard of him during my 1/2 century on this planet, his legacy is nil.

I gather Mr King is an American from the USA, and wow! he has retired! Wow!
Did he ever have anything of relevance to say to the UK people? I read from the above posts that he was a pale-Parkinson(retired)-imitation. My guess is that every country has one. Perhaps we can have a Have Your Say eulogy each time one of the other couple of hundred retire.

    Now about Julian Assange...

For the record, Larry King's shows are available in the UK, usually on CNN at 2am. I have watched him off and on for years. He is an extremely good interviewer, a straight talker, he gets the best out of his guests without too much self-aggrandisement. He interviewed some iconic figures like Reagan, Sinatra and Kermit the Frog. If I have one criticism of Larry King it is that he sometimes let his own politics get in the way of his interviews. When he interviewed Marlon Brando the subject of Arab terrorism came up. Brando mentioned that Zionists blew up of the King David hotel. King promptly interrupted him "They were oppressed!" and went to ads. Anyway, I think he is more likeable than Piers Morgan.

  • Comment number 61.

What influence will Larry King leave on the media?
That talk shows are as much entrtainment as debate, and personally, I never liked mixing the two. I like my debates "tough".
The fact that Larry King is recognized in the United States as one of the premier broadcast "interviewers", demonstrates to me the superficialty of most American broadcast shows - as in "Please, don't give me anything heavy to think about. I might rupture my brain!"
In June, 2010, Larry announced his step down as host of the show but said he'd continue to host specials for CNN. I probably won't watch these specials either.
King was non-confrontational; he asked symplitic, open-ended questions; I guess this made him attractive to important figures who didn't want to get down & dirty. King was noted for his lack of preparation; he bragged that he never read the books of authors that were scheduled to appear on the show. Personally, if I was the author, I would find this insulting.
He may have interviewed many leading figures, but there was no depth - no challenge - no Charlie Rose.
In September, 2010, CNN confirmed that Piers Morgan would occupy King's 9:00 timeslot from January 2011 onward. My brain said hoo-ray!
I am a big fan of Piers Morgan; I look forward to the imposition of Piers' style, wit and intellect.
In February, 1987, King suffered a major heart attack, followed by quintuple-bypass. He wrote two books about living with heart disease.
    1. Mr. King, You're Having a Heart Attack: How a Heart Attack and Bypass Surgery Changed My Life (with NY's Newsday science editor B. D. Colen) &
    2. Taking On Heart Disease: Famous Personalities Recall How They Triumphed over the Nation's #1 Killer and How You Can, Too (the experience of various celebrities with cardiovascular disease such as Regis Philbin).
What will Larry King's lasting impression be?
Larry King will leave no lasting impression on me.
What are your memories of his shows?
To his credit (way back when) Larry talked about Jackie Gleason. Apparently Jackie Gleason didn't like Larry's set; so Larry and Jackie changed the set; they changed the lighting. Thereafter Jackie became Larry's mentor. Jackie Gleason was pivotal in getting Larry a hard-to-get on air interview with Frank Sinatra.
Other than this tribute to Jackie Gleason, I really have very few memories about the shows of Larry King...maybe because I was too inclined not to watch them.

Larry King has been a fixture for many years here in the United States. Personally he is not one of my most favorite interviewers but he has had some interesting guests. I can understand a lot of the comments here though...I mean if you announced something about Terry Wogan or Nigel Dempster (yes I know he is dead) here in the US, nobody would really care because they are not part of our everyday culture here.

  • Comment number 67.

Another topic for Americans or Italians? What about us?

  • Comment number 68.

He hosted a low brow show where guests usually went to sell something, e.g. books, films, etc. He asked no questions of consequence. It was a sort of reality show, so prevalent now in the US. He leaves no mark on the media.

  • Comment number 69.

Larry King interviewed people of notoriety. The actual content was something that was establish pro or con and sensationalized. I listen to a few of government news propagandist just to say yea?! I know where that dialog is coming from, where it is going to, what it will not go on to say and why it is there.

Larry King had 8 wives so far and there was a controversy about them that was used that cast a cruel shadow on him. Larry King wore the same attire so you easily recognized him when you even caught a glimpse of him.

I rather liked Larry King because he wasn't all hyped up and in a frenzy abusing his guest usually and seem to put his guest at ease. Watching him he brought out what you knew and allowed his guest to fill in what was not illuminated the person wanted known. He seemed to allow some balance of fairness although, if it was a event about the person in the news he wouldn't shy from pointing it out but gave the person the opportunity to defend their self and justify their action and reasoning.

Being not into what Big Brother has to say, on Big Brothers Media, see it mute as far as truth and a subversion on central ideas I am not persuaded to align to.

No - that would be exactly what they want.

The 91热爆 launched the HYS type sites when they thought they were in touch with and reflecting public opinion.

As time's gone by, it's clear that a lot of public opinion is exactly what the 91热爆 doesn't want to hear. The public in general tends to be either sceptical of or hostile to the 91热爆's views, and increasingly, to the 91热爆 itself.

I suspect the HYS sites are in line for cutbacks. The 91热爆 wants to lecture YOU, and tell you what to think. It doesn't want to be told what YOU think. It wants to carry on lying in peace (see what I did there...?)

As for Larry King - I suspect this thread is more the result of lazy journalism and the 91热爆's rather childish America-obsession than of any thought-through plan. The 91热爆/Guardian types like to think they are the opposite of the despised Daily Mail/Heil/Wail readers, but in fact they're a bunch of culturally blinkered Little Englanders. They find Europe and foreign languages a bit scary, so they don't cover it. The US is easy and not intimidating to them.

Wyn at No 1 writes - Larry Who??? And he/she is exactly correct - why at least, Mods, do you not make some nod to the fact that LKL is an exclusively American phenomenon ? in the way that, say, David Dimbleby is exlusively Brit - although you people at the Beeb did oust the very worthy and knowledgeable Matt Frei on election night 2008 in favor of the Dimbleby factor, (who BTW, was way out of his depth - we had to turn to CNN to avoid the painful sight of Matt Frei trying to help the guy out with names, etc., from his seat in the second row - I've been wanting to tell you people that for some time - so thanks for the opportunity). The man on the Clapham omnibus has never seen LK man, does not know LK man unless through package tours on vacation in the US and cannot possibly be expected to comment (except for the knee jerk nastiness on all topics US which Brits seem to succumb to these days).

BTW, LK's 'replacement' would be a total unknown here in the US, were it not for his self advertising stint on reality TV over here. Anyone seen his ad?? He wants to be a 'little bit dangerous' - Piers Morgan is about as dangerous as a kid's stuffed bunny, and very similar in appearance. I give him a month, tops - then back to serious business - I say Ted Koppel...

Larry King is corporate media. Let鈥檚 鈥淗ave Your Say鈥 on Julian Assange and WikiLeaks.
Or is 91热爆 afraid of freedom media?
Julian Assange is much more popular and far more newsworthy.
