I can understand Russia getting the 2018 as they have never hosted the event before, but how on earth could they have picked Qatar for the 2022 is beyond belief.

As a football fan, but also someone who values honesty, I'm glad we didn't win in a poll where so many of the candidates are tainted with allegations of corruption. Panorama highlighted so many issues that seem to have been swept under the table by FIFA. I hope that as a nation we put all possible pressure on other nations, to join us and investigate them fully. Had we won, we probably could not have done so.

Government priorities wrong, obviously. Our prime minister was wasting time (and more of our money) cooing to Fifa rather than running his now ground to a halt country.

If FIFA's wish is to take the World Cup to developing nations why then do they ask for Bids from all the countries. Let them adult enough to be honest about it and save the Developed countries Hundreds of Thousands of Pounds/Euros/Dollars in a time of Financial Crisis.

The English bid was guilty of trying too hard, it seems they were stepping on so many peoples’ toes that they became annoying. Smug confidence never looks good either, neither does an unhealthy obsession with money. No doubt the media will get blamed though.

Sorry that we wont have a World Cup here in my lifetime but also pleased that we won't have to pay for it as I suspect we will be still struggling to pay for the Olympics.

From a purely logistical 'ability to host' standpoint, England would have been the ideal choice.

In terms of everything else, from the amount of money slushing around FIFA to the arrogance of the English game from a fairly netural 'casual' football watcher I'm not suprised we didn't get it. Nor overly disappointed. That said I'm not normally one for the 'oh but think of the money it will generate' arguments, but in terms of the economy it would have done far more than the blated mess that will be the overhyped 2012 London stageshow - so from that view it's a shame.

I watched the results on the 91Èȱ¬ news channel followed by the discussion with Linekar, Shearer etc. Why hasn't someone said - "the 91Èȱ¬ should not have made or shown the panorama programme until after the vote! it's the 91Èȱ¬ thats lost it for us". The Head of the 91Èȱ¬ should be sacked for allowing the programme to go out. I hope they put out an apology every hour through the next week!

BRILLIANT !!! We are an indebted country who cannot really afford to host this type of event at the moment and despite all this rubbish about the inward cash flow we would make a financial loss. Holland did the math and came up with that very conclusion. We are also spared the conditions imposed by FIFA that were exposed on the Panorama program and we have its author and the 91Èȱ¬ to genuinely thank for that. We are also spared the undignified mass hysteria that we, in the UK, dollop onto every commercial and media enterprise - there would have been no escape.
And we are spared saturation coverage of the most unedifying spectacle of overpaid juvenile behaviour we call football. A beautiful game it aint. I for one am delighted.

I, personally, have no interest in football, got nothing against it and if it's your sport then I'm sorry for you. I am disappointed that the UK will not benefit from the commerce that is associated with such an event, we really could have done with that. I am not surpised at the decision, following the British media's apparent "let's shoot ourselves in the foot" attitude in recent weeks. I also believe that Blatter is no friend of the U.K. and that he represents an organisation that seems to behave like a bunch of dinosaurs (e.g.the refusal to allow technology arguably robbed Ireland's and England's chances of progression in the competition).
It's sad because I believe that we have better infrastructure/stadia than Russia, but good luck to them, they won the bid, and there's no reversing it!

Those of who remember the 'joyous' Euro 96 also remember the sky-high ticket prices, the vast majority of games with stadiums 1/3 full and the marketing gorge-fest which accompanied it. Would it have been any different this time or exploitation on an even grander scale? Personally I'm glad it's gone elsewhere - at least the sports promotion parasites who prey off genuine supporters won't get an opportunity to fleece them at every turn.

Can I thank the 91Èȱ¬ and Panorama for helping to ruin a long held dream of mine - to go and watch a World Cup game in my country in my lifetime. You should remember that WE pay your wages, WE pay for your programming and WE suffer when you put out programmes that can damage bids like this. As a person involved in youth football and have been involved with football at grass roots level for over 30 years, I would much prefer to have seen the money used on that - grassroots football rather than play a game within FIFA's somewhat politically skewed world.

Well it can only be held at a country a time, so there is no right and no wrong. Any country being chosen means all other applicants will 'miss out' on that occasion. And don't forget that England hosted the Euro less than 15 years ago. So no need to sulk! What I personally find pathetic is the amount of anti-russian propaganda that we were all exposed to over the last few days. Don't tell me that was a coincidence!

One of the main reasons FIFA quotes for awarding World Cup competitions to developing and poorer nations is that it will somehow 'improve the lives of the poorer people in those countries'...what a complete load of rubbish, the only people that see any sort of life improvement are the already wealthy people in those countries.

I actually find it rather sick that these beaurocrats think it's a good idea to parade incredibly wealthy sports stars in front of some of the poorest people and bring more wealth to the people who are already wealthy in those countries. Also, they're going to spend billions of dollars building new stadiums and infrastructure whilst the average citizen in those countries lives in real poverty...just sick and wrong.

I think it's fair to say that Panorama AND the ridiculous scenes at St Andrews last night have both played a negative part in the result. To lose as favourites to win is one thing, but to come last is unforgivable. I doubt it affected Russia's victory - it was quite clear from Qatar winning the 2022 tournament that FIFA wanted something 'outside the box' (pardon the pun) and so it was always going to be difficult to convince them otherwise - but we'll never know now. It's a shame we can't just have seen an even playing field (again, excuse the pun), but I guess six years after the Olympics is probably a little too soon to host the World Cup. I'm sure England will try again next time and will hopefully be in a better position culturally and financially to host the tournament, although I doubt that somehow.

So, Qatar is to build all these new air conditioned stadiums in the middle of the desert, which doesn't sound very green to me. Also, what are the Summer temperatures there? Won't the players suffer? Sounds crazy to me, but what do I know?

Any nation winning the right to host it for the first time has to be a good thing, right?

I do think the number of time zones in Russia might end up posing a problem in terms of scheduling though.

Qatar is a bold choice considering their almost total lack of footballing heritage - although troublemakers aren't going to get away with ANYTHING there!

I'm relieved, actually. For a start, we don't have the money for it as a country. Secondly, it means that football-haters like me don't have to put up with the travel chaos and general hysteria it would cause! This way all I have to do to avoid the World Cup is turn off the TV!

Well done to Russia and Qatar, both had excellent bids! However another let down for ENGLAND beliefs built on the British medias hype! It would be revolutionary if the media didn't hype England as much as they do. Examples - every world cup ("We have the best england team ever" and they under perform. Rooney fever - rooney underperforms. the list is endless!

Actually with FIFA demanding tax free status (to validate a bid) it would have cost us around 3 to 5% of our GDP like previous Nations who have staged the World Cup.

I know Fifa is trying to broaden its scope,influence and promote itself in relatively isolated regions in football terms like Russia and Qatar, But why give it to nations with extreme temperatures during most of the year not just the summer apart from other social problems?. It's a shame they learnt nothing from SA 2010.

Hooray! No world cup ballyhoo on our doorstep, no traffic jams, minimal coverage of this silly event. Says a lot for the persuasive powers of the UK team. Cameron does not seem to have much influence does he?

But the big laugh is that Qatar beat the mighty British effort.

Now for those of us who actually love soccer it is a time to rejoice.
