Polzeath in England, best towards the end of summer when there's not that many people around.

Amsterdam - a mixture of high art, stunning architecture, diverse cultural entertainment and downright sleaze.

Birmingham.

They do things better there.

Anywhere with a good climate and nothing to appeal to children.

Somewhere sunnier and more interesting than the UK!

My garage.. Getting time to potter with my old car is more relaxing than sitting on a beach.

Staying in bed.

I'd prefer to go to Florida if I had to choose between the two, I prefer foreign holidays, but Blackpool was good fun when I went several years ago.

I don't really have a favourite destination, I prefer to go to places I’ve never been before, take a chance to see the world so to speak. And no I will not be going away this year sadly.

I agree with whiler. Polzeath is just wonderful. Been going there for as long as I can remember. I like to surf in the mornings, fly my kite in the afternoon, laze around on the beach for a bit, go for dinner in the White Heron (please say it's still open, we're friends with the family that run it), have a pint in the Oyster Catcher, take a day off to walk down to Rock then catch the ferry to Padstow, take a Thursday evening to to down to Port Issac and watch the brass band eating fish and chips then do the floral dance up the hill. It's my favourite place in the whole world.

If you have one, stick to your back garden - and hope the neighbours have gone to Florida!

Certainly not Blackpool, although it can be fun if you are visiting for a day or two. I suspect it got more votes simply because more people have heard of it.
There are lots of wonderful places in Britain, however the main problem is the British Weather. Most places are absolutely wonderful if the sun is shining, but hellish if you have to endure 7 days of constant rain.
Because the weather can not be guaranteed I think foreign destinations compare favourably with British resorts, and my all time favourite place has to be San Francisco. It isn't particularly hot, but the sun shines and the air is clear. I also liked Cape Town.

Outside the UK its got to be Israel for the people, culture, history, weather & modern life.

In the UK I live in the lake district so I dont really need to go anywhere though I do like London or the West Highlands.

Corfu is my idea of Heaven. The weather, the food, the culture. Perfection.

This year there'll be no holiday though, as I'm waiting to pop in 7 weeks!

Anywhere in the UK countryside/seaside. We mainly holiday in the UK and only go abroad every 4-5 years. When you hear people marvelling about the architecture or views in Europe then you travel around this country and realise we have it all here, and in some instances, much better.

The beaches of Donegal; so clean and so peaceful.

Portugal every time.

Lovely people, great weather, clean beaches, healthy food, and the beer's not bad.

im a big fan of holidays in the uk but its always a pain when there are too many tourists. when it gets really busy then its not relaxin at all. hopefully with the resession then it will be quieter not so many tourists and i can have my holiday in peace. its poole for me!

My favourite spot in the world, never mind just the UK, is the Island of Mull, beautiful, remote, peaceful, dramatic weather (one minute thunder the next sunshine), amazing wildlife only problem is the midges.

Swansea and particularly the Gower Peninsula for me.

Outside the UK, I think I'd rather chill out in Mallorca with the waves lapping the beach and the sun beating down while I peruse a good book.

Isle of Wight. We go camping there every Easter, there is loads to do and see. Well worth the cost of a ferry.

1) Britain - any non-sewage ridden British coastline and beaches are welcome, but increasingly hard to find.

2) In Europe - has to be Rome; but NOT part of a tour at all?

3) Paris is totally OFF OUR list - expect to be mugged or expect hordes of pick-pocket gangs that French police do nothing about and enjoy the opportunity to laugh at you?

4) Japan - is totally fabulous - great people with a very welcome, warm and kind attitude to tourists! Very under-estimated and a beautiful country enhanced by it's lovely people.

5) Germany was OK, but they are still deeply confused what tourism is about?

6) Portugal - only use the best hotels/b&bs?
7) Spain - only use the best hotels/b&bs?

For me it's Germany - whether the the Bavarina Alps, Harz mountains, the Eifel - they're all peaceful (save for the pesky weekend idiot motorcyclists!), scenic, great for walking and to cap it all the food drink and accommodation is of excellent quality, and not overpriced.

Even at a sterling exchange rate of € 1.10, Germany was still cheaper than UK for rural holidays, and the roads are blissfully quiet once you're clear of the autobahns.

Agreed. Its got 2 restraunts that serve gourmet meals for about 1/4 of the price of a similar meal in London and its really quiet on an evening when all the day trippers have gone. I went last year and I'm going back this year.... I can drive there from the East midlands in less time than you spend in airports waiting to get humiliated by the check in & security staff too.

Sorry #13 - for politcal reasons I wouldn't set foot in Israel for business or pleasure reasons. It might be a great place but the actions of it's political masters rank it up there with South Africa in the apartheid days and I wouldn't want to help finance that sort of regime for the sake of a fortnights holiday.

Errr... you don't seem to know much about Israel. Its got really nice beach resorts and 5000 years of history to explore. Most of the country doesn't look like the Gaza strip and there are no more guns on the street than in Paris or London.

I had a great holiday as a kid in Northern Ireland during the height of the troubles. We stayed on the Antrim coast not the Falls road. The same applies for Israel. Stick to the safe bits and you're in no more danger than in any other country and safer than in many.

My place in Spain! Getting it ready for our retirement, pool is nice and warm now, garden is coming on nicely. Air Con works well.

Sorry but for me it knocks spots off Blackpool any day of the week. It's not in an "English onclave", it's not anywhere near Benidorm or the cheap packet holiday areas so we avoid the worst that Britain sends to Spain on holiday. We are in a nice quiet area where the sun shines most of the time. Bliss!

My favorite holiday is the Greek island of Zakynthos, and I was last there for the summer half-term break. I'll take anywhere in the Greek Islands, though: my Greek is improving rapidly, and I like the people and the food...

Next trip is to Lanzarote, however, so I'd better blow the dust off my Spanish and remember how to drive on the right again.

Abroad? The beaches of Goa with 'real' India in the hinterland, are hard to beat. I originally went there as a hippy in the 1970s, so perhaps I am looking at Goa through a purple haze! :-)

With no pay rise on the horizon, soaring petrol prices, rising National Insurance, tax credits being stopped, VAT rising and my boss expecting me to up my productivity every year but not my wages which are in real terms less than I was earning ten years ago (salary replacing overtime) I have neither the spare time nor the money to take a well earnt break.

I suppose we will still need a third runway at Heathrow to fly out the fatcats, bankers and politicians that are doing better than ever on the expense of everyone elses backs.

The word parasites springs to mind.

Blackpool was fun in its heyday but now is a just a glorified massive grubby drinking den to which I would never dream of taking my children. There are far better places thoughout the UK for children and families whether they are bubbling with commercial fun palaces or nice quiet retreats.
My family and I have not been abroad for years now but have enjoyed every holiday we have had in this country. Lateley we have had a couple of lovely breaks in Ellary and Gairloch in Scotland. No slot machines or gut churning rides but still masses to do if you wish or you can just peacefully enjoy the area.

Monetenegro is stunning, fjiords liek scandinavia but hot and not that popular with western Europeans yet, simply gorgeous, could go back time and time again.

Further afield, South America is wonderful and Bolivia has the most stunning scenary I have ever seen, but not sure I would need to go more than the once.

In the UK, I have to agree with the person who said Whitby, lovely place just need to go up long enough next time to spend some time exploring the surounding moors

Get up to Redcar on the North East coast of England. ( remember the Dunkirk beach scene in Attonement ).

Herne Bay. Mind you I live there! But don't let that put you off. Other than that Coverack in Cornwall, and at the other end of the country there are some fabulous, wild, quiet beaches up near Dounreay if you don't mind the incongruous sight of the reactor in the distance!

Every year I go trail riding to Canjou in the Catalan Hills - a poultice on the soul. You can't beat Madeira for weather and walking (the levadas are as remarkable as the Great Wall of China, in their own way)then I love lots of mini breaks in the UK - days in north Norfolk where it never rains and you can take your dogs on the beaches and in the pubs; watercolour painting in my back garden, days in our remarkable ancient cities (Shrewsbury next), agricultural shows, stately homes, picnic concerts. I am having the lovliest summer ever!

Worth the cost ???? You wouldnt say that if you lived here and had to pay it every time you wanted a day away.

I took my family to see the Blackpool Illuminations, the year before last. 3 miles of pester-powered, over-priced money-grabbing is not my idea of a good holiday destination. We're going to Cornwall, this year, where we can swim, sunbathe and see things worth seeing, without having to pay through the nose for any of it.

My favourite ever destination was Tobruk, in Libya, but that was long ago. More lately I have found Eastern europe to be intriguing - especially Odessa in Ukraine. The history of the city spans centuries, during which it has seen many changes.

However, I will not be going there this year, but have found an undisclosed location in Bulgaria where I can rest, enjoy sweltering heat and not have to cope with children (mine are now up and away from home). The people are friendly, the food is delicious, and I get to point out to everyone that I'm Scottish, and not English, which always seems to lead to offers of alcohol and partying. My wife and I love it.

A trip to Alaska is the best holiday I've had to date. The scenery is stunning: Standing on a glacier surrounded by magnificent views, seeing wildlife close up on both land and sea.

Things to do: White water rafting, helicopter trip to a glacier, sleigh ride pulled by huskies, quad biking near the Alaskan oil pipeline. I'm going again.

For a do-nothing-beach-holiday with a bit of luxury, the Maldives or the Seychelles... or the fabulous Ocean Club in the Bahamas.

Isle of Wight is perfect for me and my family, yes I can afford spain or florida but why would I waste hours at an airport, food poisoning, robberies, drunken violence when I can spend 2 hours travelling and then relax for the whole holiday.

Isle of Wight isnt perfect but its much better than more holidays I have been on.

Cornwall, hardly any chavs unless you visit newquay.

Stunning beaches, great pubs and bars, plenty of open space. If the swell is right the surf is epic and i've had better days on some remote cornish reefs than i have in indonesia.
i'll take that over some over crowded chav filled spanish resort with fried food and watered down lager steping over puddles of vomit walking home from the pub ! NICE

Malaysia, Nepal, Alaksa, Galapagos. Would love to visit the Everglades again.

Dartmoor, Exmoor, New Forest, Mull - as long as civilisation is as far away as possible.

Resorts is more difficult because I've hardly ever stayed in any. Sidmouth or Lynmouth because of the surrounding areas, I suppose.

Blackpool or Florida - no brainer really, it has to be Florida if you keep away from Disney and the mass money driven tourism. Blackpool is awful.

I don't really holiday in the UK; too expensive, terrible and disgusting food unless you pay a lot of money for it, weather unreliable, endless traffic congestion, and poorly behaved selfish, loutish, people - not this kid!

Favourite destination for a relaxing holiday is rural Italy, Tuscany or Umbria. Fantastic weather, gorgeous food and fine wine, friendly nice people.

Best holiday ever (this will buck the trend) was a 5 week mountaineering expedition to the Pakistani Himalaya. Great mountaineering, stunning scenery, great people, no commercially driven mass tourism (compare Nepal) and no hassle from street beggars and con artists (compare India)

Somewhere far and exotic! I am pondering about going to Rajasthan for 3 weeks (after the monsoon) or maybe Vietnam. Maybe I'll throw in a long weekend in Ibiza to compensate.

Somewhere with a bit of history, and where they don't cater for 'English tastes' (bingo, karaoke, etc).

Ah, the wonderful island of Trinidad. Not over-run with tourists, Robinson Crusoe beaches, invigorating rain forests, terrific food, great people. And the music !
But as the pot is empty this year, I will just look at the photographs.

Upemall, no direspect intended but I presume you have not been to Israel? The modern cities mixed with the historical building's are fantastic. The hot weather & the beaches are also outstanding too and they come complete with out the drunken louts from the UK. There is more to Israel than you see in the news. However if its a prision camp you wish, try North Korea.

madiera. sd is right,the walking there is fantastic. the food is fantastic,the people friendly,it must be one of the safest destinations on earth although some of the roads in funchal are narrow.

If I stay in the UK, it's usually the Cotswolds or possibly Cornwall (but the latter only in the off season - in summer it's heaving with the great unwashed).

In the UK, my favourite holiday destination would definately be Whitby (we had 3 holidays there when I was a kid, and I've also stayed there as an adult). The best foreign holiday destination I've been to is Stockholm, it was wonderful, although it is expensive.

The beaches in Tel Aviv are great, clean and safe and a trendy modern city with lots of bars and restaurants and the Israeli people afre very friendly. Secondly Brighton not a sandy beach but a great resort, a million times nicer and classier than Blackpool !

In general I have found that recognised holiday destinations also quickly become recognised for the price of holidaying there. If you want a good holiday, whatever your tastes, you need to look a bit further than the headline and find somewhere away from the "normal" tourist industry. For some that may be visit the Scottish Hebridean islands, for others it might be hidden villages around The Wash or in Cornwall or Wales. Those going abroad might find that giving Costadel Sol or Costa Brava a miss will reap dividends. I have holidayed on various continents and islands and always look for the hidden geams. I also don't tell others exactly where I went because otherwise my paradise quickly becomes another tourist destination. So I won't say where I'm going - only that it's exactly what I want and need this year.

As a favorite place to holiday i would have to go for Norway, it really does seem to have it all as far as i am concerned. The country has outstanding natural beauty, people are lovely, friendly, interesting and just about everyone speaks English 'fluently'.
However that is just a part of the attraction, it is the outdoor lifestyle that just keeps this place on top of the pile, outstanding. This is the kind of place a boy 'needs' to be brought up.
The people here believe there is no such thing as bad weather, just wear the right clothes.

Blackpool or Florida is hardly a fair comparison; Parts of Florida are great, but they are the parts away from the theme parks, but parts of Lancashire have their own charms.

Best recent trips were the west coast of Ireland, and the Mosel valley which were both fantastic motorcycle trips.

Me and a mate looked into trying to go to North Korea a few years ago, mainly because we reasoned it had to be the ultimate 'undiscovered' holiday destination, plus they do mad things like employing people to clean bird muck off the Great Leader's statues the moment it falls.

Turns out that they're not really that keen on letting westerners into the country, for pretty much any reason.

Myanmar on the other hand is looking quite promising so next year we should get the holiday in an insane dictatorship we've been after.

Personally, when I get tired of city life, I decamp for my acreage in beautiful, peaceful, uncrowded rural NW US, where I have built a 3500 sq ft dome home which looks out over rolling hills, forests and streams and where the deer and antelope breakfast each day in my garden.

Top that - on second thoughts, don't bother trying.

My favourite vacation spots are Cumberland Maryland, Altoona Penna., Folkston Ga., Dalton Ga, and Richmond Va.,
They are all pleasant places in themselves, but in particular are all railroad hotspots.

Anywhere from a favourite inn in Barngates in the Lake District to New York (flying out for a week and returning by Queen Mary 2). I do love Blackpool, Filey and Skegness, of course, because these modern Pompeis suck up all the people I never wish to meet on holiday.

Anywhere where numbers of people are few the views are open and vast or historical and the air is as fresh as the sunrise.

I am fortunate to be able to take two vacations each year: a spring trip abroad (I'm from USA) and a fall trip to Disney World. Favorite international destinations include Paris, Belize, London, and India. This year I visited Peru and next year I will go to Guatemala.

Disney World is a great destination in general. I usually visit in September and I am always impressed by the large numbers of British visitors. On some days it seems as if the Brits are the majority nationality in the Disney and Universal Orlando theme parks.

Anywhwere BUT Blackpool. I prefer to go the Lakes, Northumberland (Bamburgh) Cornwall or Anglesey.

I loved California when we went 10 years ago, touring around, seeing Grand Canyon, San Francisco and lots more. I'd like to see the Rockies or go to New Zealand one day maybe.

I was talking about holidays only last night with my mother. Glenbrittle, rock pools and the Cuillens was one that stood out. From later in life just passing through Glencoe was amazing and for us twits - me about 21 who had run out of money in the cold 81 with a motorbike, I'll never forget the B&B and the massive breakfast for our few pennies when we stopped in Callandar having abandoned plans and turned round - eat more lads -it will be your last chance for a proper meal before you get home [to N Wales] was true.

Dublin brings the happy memory of the carpets rolled back and watching (I don't dance) set dancing after the (musical) session in Hughes'...

Where I lived most of my life does have some wonderful scenery nearby whether going to Llyn Dulyn or (a local's spot) near Elephant;s Cave on the Great Orme but I guess we might all to easily taske these things for granted.

Florida over Blackpool any day. But as we cannot afford to go to Florida every year, anywhere with a bit of guarenteed sunshine and not too many English tourists.

Parts of Portugal and Spain are still unspoilt and are free from 'all day English breakfast' restaurants.

Go away to the sunshine and sample the local cuisine and character of a warm climate.

However I have spent holiday time in ALL the listed places and found them great places to spend valuable holiday time, but don't forget those in-land places like, Bakewell, Norwich, London, Matlock Bath (all peak District and Lake District)

I can't top it LA Londener. I briefly had a friend on the Internet. She looked out to Mt Shasta and showed me some pics. My reaction was "WOW" Moving over to the East, I would like to see New England in the fall but closest I have been is only tasting some genuine (B? dark) maple syrup... It had a richer taste to anything I've had from here.

Deer though I can do in Norfolk, UK! Where I live now, the Red Deer can cross into the field from I think Gunton once in a blue moon and the tiny Muntjack is around. Bird watching is more of an attraction with for example the salt marshes at Clwy.

Favourite holiday destination abroad has got to be Rome. Beautiful city and a wonderful place to simply walk around and explore. Been there several times and it is just as wonderful each time we go.

In the UK, well we live in Harrogate in North Yorkshire so we have a magnificently beautiful town right here with the Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire dales national parks on our doorstep, what more could you want than culture, countryside and the generosity of Yorkshire folk !!

I wish I could afford a UK holiday.

I'm sure there are many great value places for an off-season break - the trouble is I'm married to a teacher. We can't get away off-season.

We end up going to France or Germany because the accomodation we like is cheaper there.

Never found anywhere better than Morgan Porth in Cornwall.As for America-no way.Theme parks and burger bars are what the yanks do best but its not for me.I just cringe when people say "do you want cheese with that?".

Been carrying on the chat at home. Iona would be on my and my mother's list. She has also "sold me" Florence. and though I've not been there, Brittany.

I'm going to Los Angeles, so it'll be Santa Monica beach for me, but I'd love to be going back to New Zealand where there are the most beautiful beaches.

Last year I went to Antarctica which I thought was amazing. I never feel sentimental about anything but the landscapes were so incredible, I did feel moved. Also, it meant I visited all continents in 12 months - what a claim!

I enjoyed Borneo too and there are some pretty amazing parts of India and China - the landscape in Tibet is amazing. I'm hoping to visit the Hunza Valley later this year and have been told wonderful things about it.

My favourite holiday destination would be 1975. You can get up to a lot more mallarky when you're 16 than you can when you're fifty, the train service was better and the country wasn't overrun by PC yuppies, chavs, wannabees and old peole with dogs and 4x4s cluttering up the countryside.

I want to go to Grimsby someday. I don't know anything about it, but you have to love a place with such a dickensian name. Is it worth coming from the US to spend two weeks there?

thinking again, Greece would have to count amongst my parents favourites. Schinoousa and surrounding area was a paradise to her maybe 15 years ago .

I stopped going to the UK seaside for anything longer than a day trip about 20 years ago. The price I was paying was the same as a week or two abroad. Apart from better weather abroad, back in the UK everywhere was so run down and the service was sloppy and unprofessional. The UK does not invest in it's seaside towns and they are grim and depressing. It's not enough to just take profit out - you have to invest some money back in - even a coat of paint would make it look better. I think the UK seasides killed off their own businesses through greed and laziness.

Its all in the name mate, Grim-sby. I've been there once and don't plan to go back. Though maybe you could add it in to a 2 week UK tour and see whats its like for yourself.
