A sticky patch and a bumpy pitch

As I have mentioned before, there have been one or two sticky patches during my career.

Probably the scariest was just a couple of weeks before the start of the 2003 - 2004 season when I was still without a club having been released by . Drastic times call for drastic measures. We were a young family living with my wife's mum and dad (very nice of them I might add), so I needed to get something sorted!

Having managed to get hold of a list with all the managers' phone numbers, I tried to make contact with as many as I could. In addition to all the managers in and , I also chanced my arm with those in charge of some of the smaller . In an ideal world it would have been nice to give a call but I decided to go for the more sensible approach!

As a player, when you get to a certain age you begin to and identify key junctions where . In my case there have been about three or four, but one in particular springs to mind.

I was in my second season at and it was destined for the Championship. Unfortunately, that night I had one of those games that all players dread but that we all experience, some more often than others.

If only the lad was world class...

Hi, hope you are all well.

Unfortunately, as I am still I was at a bit of a loose end this weekend. and with it being an overnight stay due to the travelling distance involved, I was left at home.

It has not been all doom and gloom for me, however. Firstly, we managed to grind out a victory at Sutton in the FA cup first round and secondly, I was lucky enough to witness top class football at its very best.

The game I am referring to, of course, is . I have no allegiance to either side but I was completely .

FA Cup brings happy memories

Hi, hope you are all well.

I would like to start off by thanking you all for the reaction to last week's blog concerning the pressure on young kids playing football. It is obviously a topic that we all feel very strongly about and is no doubt an issue that we will discuss again. It got me thinking about my own childhood and how lucky I was.

Contrary to what some people might think there was no pressure placed on me despite coming from a "football" family, in fact it was quite the opposite. Plenty of people might have imagined prancing up and down the touchline at my Under-10s match, and making himself heard in such ways as but nothing could be further from the truth.
