Horizon on Everest

91热爆 at last

Well, I have just arrived back from Los Angeles, and the sun tan cream did not come out once. The cardiopulmonary exercise testing course was extremely worthwhile, and I learnt loads. Now, it is back to the overflowing inbox, telephone answer machine and all the other urgent jobs jostling for my attention. I am going to have to sit down tomorrow and use a time management tool to organise my priorities so that I do not get slightly overwhelmed. Still, it is really exciting because we start testing our first trekkers on January 4th, and that is less than three months away. Suddenly, everything that we planned for is becoming a reality.

Trekking up the Khumbu

At the end of the Cho Oyu trip, a small group of the XE team headed out from Kathmandu to trek up the Khumbu to find tea houses or lodges for our trekkers to stay in next year. As we were acclimatised from having lived at 5600m for 3 weeks, we were able to move along the trail much faster than is normally the case. I had not been to the Khumbu before, and I must say the scenery was stunning. Having spent the last six weeks in Tibet, and in particular on the somewhat barren Tibetan plateau and higher, the Khumbu was a rich green contrast. The local residents are friendly, and only too happy to help.

Well, it has been a while, and I apologise for that. Whilst most of the team arrived back in the UK 10 days ago, Mike, Denny, Mac and myself stayed out in Nepal. We were joined by two other XE people, Monty and Blanche, and trekked up the Khumbu valley to check out tea houses for the expedition next year. More about that later. In the meantime, a few words about being back in the UK.

Summit and safe return

Another quick note to say that 9 of our team made it to the summit of Cho Oyu, and back down again safely. This was in the company of 6 of our fantastic sherpas! They arrived back at advanced base camp this lunchtime, and some of them look pretty exhausted, and the rest of them totally exhausted! That's what happens when you climb an 8000m peak.

We are now packing up as fast as we can, as we have 46 yaks, and need to get to Kathmandu as soon as possible. This is officially because most of the team fly out on Saturday. However, I am in desperate need of a shower, and is causing me much more concern! This is as four of us are walking up the Khumbu to sort the labs for next year, and not getting back to the UK until the middle of October.

7000m

There has been a delay in updates for the website again, as all but one of us has been up the mountain/ I have returned early this afternoon, as I am afraid I only made it up to the base of the ice fall. The height at this point is just shy of 7000m. Hopefully, eight of the team wil be setting off to summit tonight at around 2am.
