Tonight's lead item has taken on an unexpected importance after recent events

Our three topics this evening: Debt, New Towns and Scrooge.

Redcar steel plantFollowing with the loss of 1,700 jobs our feature on getting on top of personal finances is sadly even more timely than we could possibly have imagined.

The government is backing the £12 million scheme to help people get out of debt.

As we see in the film, it's something that certainly has made a difference to some people in Carlisle. It may soon be a service even more in demand on Teesside.

When I went to India earlier this year to look at Corus' parent company Tata Steel the Redcar plant was already under threat. It doesn't make the announcement any less shocking. You can see the reaction on the .

In the second of tonight's films David Heathcote is sparking a debate about New Towns. You can add your views to a separate blog I've written about this controversial subject.

A final thought; we had a real job finding a Christmassy background for the link into our third film about Charles Dickens. As you'll see in my previous blog Billingham is a really friendly place but might just be in line for the title of Britain's least festive town.

Admittedly I was there a couple of weeks ago - but whilst other towns centres were busy putting up their decorations Billingham was devoid of any public yuletide spirit. I've double checked and nothing seems to have changed.

If it hadn't been for one Santa-friendly shop that had put some effort into a festive window display I would have been stymied. !
