The White Stripes - 'Icky Thump'
Imagine our surprise when we heard the latest White Stripes single, and it wasn't a radio-friendly mild rockathon. Now imagine our utter utter delight (especially at the Anglophile title), at the possibility that rock has finally sent emo to its grave (where it is hopefully enjoying itself thoroughly), and is ruling the world with a set of bagpipes, and vicious riffs harsher than Paris Hilton's jail sentence.
The words might be indecipherable, but Jack's ferocious riffs (seriously, the man must have, like, twelve fingers or something), and Meg's ever-reliable beat say all anyone needs to hear - "we're back, and we've still got it!"
The middle eight sounds a little like a ye olde monotone ringtone, but the overall impression is one of the sixites revamped, with something to sing about other than drugs and free love (Jack sings "you can't be a pimp and a prostitute", see. That's not free love, it's very expensive), with a healthy does of '70s prog lumped in for good measure.
All of which means that if you're not throwing yourself around like a mad thing to this, you must be trapped in the dark ages. By gum, it's good.

This is really growing on me. I love the fact that it appears to be about 3 different songs put through a JML Blender with each flavour being really tasty.
Yelping isn't usually a good sound but Jack White has got it nailed.
I looove the White Stripes, but this, well it's all over the place really... i just can't quite decide if i like it or not, I also heard the new album isn't quite as good as previous ones, but i'll have to see...
