Title: My great escape

by Edward from Hampshire and Isle of Wight | in writing, fiction

'We managed to lose them earlier, but I think they've come back with friends this time!' Johnny shouted.
I felt a bullet skim past my ear, just inches away from its target, which I presumed, unfortunately, was me.
I risked a quick glance behind me at our attackers. At first I couldn't see any in the throbbing masses of crowds around us, but then I noticed the shadowy figures upon the rooftops, surrounding us in all directions. I turned back to concentrating on running. My hopes of escaping were beginning to falter, though I knew there was only one way I was getting out of this alive.
Leg it.
Johnny shouted to me, 'it seems we're in a spot of bother here!' As soon as he had said that, another bullet whizzed past his shoulder and into the thigh of a man walking in front of him. The unlucky guy collapsed to the ground, clutching his punctured leg, howling in agony.
There wasn't anything we could do about it right now, so we carried on running.
'Follow me Jamie!' Johnny ordered. He ran to a fire exit on the side of a large building. He struggled to open the door while I stared at where we just came from, expecting someone to appear there. No one did. Then a stone dropped from above. I realized how stupid I'd been.
My heavy heartbeat thudded in my ears. I looked up. There they were, all lined up along the edge of the building staring down at me. Each had a black suit on with a long old-fashioned rain coat and a hat concealing their faces in shadow. In perfect sync they pointed their guns at me.
In instinct I turned and rammed my body weight into the fire doors, smashing them open. We quickly went inside.
Johnny asked, 'What's got into you?'
Not answering, I ran forward. Light shone in my face and I wondered where I was. I heard gasps of astonishment in front of me. Oh dear. The actors stared at me in bewilderment. I realized I was on stage in the London Theatre.
There was no time to worry about that. I saw the doors way at the back and began towards them. The men had got inside now and began rapid-fire at me as I raced up the stairs. Screams echoed from the audience as I slid under an old lady's chair. I crouched down in front of one small boy's chair who started crying. I noted one of the men in suits chase me up the stairs and the others followed after him. I jumped out from my hiding spot, whacked him round the head and kneed him in the crotch. I rolled him down the stairs into the other men and quickly made my way out of the door. I grabbed a nearby plant and barricaded them in. I sighed a gasp of relief.
Uh oh.
Johnny was still in there.
