Out of the thousands of photos submitted to The Big Picture there are lots of pictures of animals, but none quite as dramatic as this one of a polar bear taken by Dave Russam at Dudley Zoo back in 1955.

Dave says: "I must have been around 11 or 13 when I took these pictures with my dad's camera, I was very lucky to get such a photo especially with a fold up camera."

There are more photos from the same visit, and Dave has very fond memories of the zoo in his childhood.

"Most bank holidays moms and dads would get us kids ready for our day out on two buses one into the city centre, then a different coloured bus to Dudley. We'd walk up the hill and then we would have to queue to get in."

"Can you imagine having camel and elephant rides? One thing I do remember about the camel was how huge his feet were like giant slippers walking down the path.

"As you can see from all people in this picture Dudley Zoo was a very popular place to visit."

"Although I am Birmingham lad I work in Tipton and from our office you can see Dudley Castle standing proud on the hill.

"Recently I took our grandchildren, aged seven and two, for a visit. I was trying to recapture my childhood, but sadly the magic isn't there for me now."

"Whenever we visited Dudley Zoo it always seemed to be in happy times with lots of laughter and playing."
