Often remembered as the last great Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb ruled Mughal India for nearly 50 years. His complicated legacy is still debated today.
Indian rebellion and the decline of the Mughal Empire
Local princes fought for control of the empire. The British East India Company used the conflicts to take control of land. From 1857, Mughal India was officially a British colony.
