Ubiquity Theatre Company is an exciting new project, working within the community to help develop local theatre skills.

This is achieved by supporting people in their transition from amateur, semi-professional and youth theatre experience to a professional setting, as well as encouraging new theatre audiences.

Thousands of young people come into the centre of Birmingham every weekend looking for some sort of social activity, but rarely venture away from a few 'safe' activities.

A change from the pubs & clubs

The options available include pubs & clubs, cinemas, theatres and sporting events - the most common being the pubs and clubs, especially at night.

It is this group of 20-35 year olds along with the more regular theatre-goers, which we are hoping to attract.

We're looking to break down the pre-conceptions that watching theatre is 'hard-work' and 'overly intellectual', and intend to reach out to audiences by creating raw, accessible and original works.

The Breakfast Club

Our first production, a new stage adaption of the classic 80's bratpack movie 'The Breakfast Club' at the Patrick Centre, has many different levels in which it can be enjoyed.

It has the pure entertainment value associated with going to see the original film. You can sit back and enjoying the production on your own terms - whether it be for the 80's nostalgia, the accessible storyline or the fantastic soundtrack including Michael Jackson, Madonna and Simple Minds.

A new experience

Even if you've never been to the theatre before, you can enjoy the productions on the same level as watching a movie - but you'll also have the chance to experience what theatre can offer over and above the silver screen, such as the intimacy with the actors, the feeling of 'being part' of the action, the added sense of emotion and understanding of the characters on stage when you see their reactions away from the 'camera shot'.

The setting for our first production - The Patrick Centre (attached to the Birmingham Hippodrome) also means that going to the theatre can be part of a social night out, with the many pubs and clubs in the surrounding area, and not just a 'cultural outing' or an 'educational visit'.

Creativity and talent

Within the company we've a range of creative talent and administrative experience, so hope this will help guide the us towards succeeding.

The actors for the first performance are: Mike Hirons, Matt Hill, Irfan Hussain, Jo Trucker, Ruth Harrell, Robin Bailey and Bob Barnett.

Assisting the production is Ruth Butler, with Jo Tucker in charge of the set design and lighting design by Tim Harrison.

For my own part, I have grown and developed within the Birmingham theatre-circle. After attending youth theatre from an early age, I've gained experience in the running of theatre companies and related business and have kept my artistic ambitions alive through work as a freelance performer, director and teacher of both music and theatre.

Ruth Harrell, Co-director for Ubiquity Theatre Co. is a teacher, workshop leader and also a director. She has had considerable management and co-ordinating experience in both artistic and commercial settings, and has been working within youth theatre for four years.

Ruth also has a background of 'Theatre In Education' that will be an integral part of the development of the theatre company.

So that's the theatre company - now come along and see us!

Gareth
