Holy Cowbell

Holy Cowbell

Dubbed 'the best worst rock 'n' roll band in the world', Reading band Holy Cowbell play their own mix of hard rock with a splash of glam and a modicum of goth. Find out more about the band below.

The History...

Holy Cowbell are:

  • Helen M (vocals)
  • Dave Slinger (guitars/vocals)
  • Nuj Farrow (drums/vocals)
  • Mike Barber (bass/vocals).

Dave has been playing guitar since he was 14.
Helen has been singing since she was 21, and playing bass since she was 19.
Thump Slutzy (aka Nuj) has been playing drums since he was 11.
Mike has been playing bass since he was 16.

In the beginning, or the early 90s at any rate....

Dave was in a band called Loose Torniquet.
Nuj was in a band called Fatal.
Helen was in a band called Domain.
Mike was in a band called Feyd.

Then Dave and Nuj met, when they joined a band called Disguys.
But they left, with another member called Tim Martin, to form God's Gift.
God's Gift had a singer called Jerry Gift, and a bass player called Julian Hobbs.
But in 1995 Julian left, so Helen took over on bass, after a brief spell in a band called Lyx.

Nuj left God's Gift in 1996 and around a year later it all ended.

After a few years of not doing very much........

Nuj had been playing bass and singing in a band called Santa Sangra.
Helen had been singing and playing keyboard in a band called Purple Fishes.
......and Dave had been in a cosmic听shambles.

But all that was to change.

Dave and Nuj got together with long time friend and bass player Steve Steele
They formed Holy Cowbell in 2002.
The band should have been called Deteriorate but Steve couldn't spell it and Nuj couldn't pronounce it.
Steve left at the end of 2003 to move to the USA and get married (bless).
So Helen took over on vocals, and after a brief spell with a bass player called Dee.......
......she took over on bass too (until Mike came along).

Meanwhile...

Dave again!

Mike formed a band called Feyd in 1990 with Rob Sowden (who went on to be the frontman for Arena).
In 1995 he was in Zebedee and in 2005 he joined Disguys.
At this time Disguys' drummer was on long-term convalescence so Nuj was recruited to take his place.
Mike and Nuj made such a good combination that in 2006 Mike was asked to join the band.
Mike and Nuj were then spectacularly sacked from Disguys (by Bob himself) during Mike's debut with Holy Cowbell in November 2006.

And the rest, as they say, is history.
