ALBION PRINTING PRESS. The Printing Industry has been a significant employer in the Country since the late eighteenth century. Printing has probably had a greater affect on peoples everyday lives throughout the World than any other process or industry. The printed word is everywhere; medicine labels (where many printers using mechanical presses began their trade in the 19th Century), newspapers, books, tickets, posters - printed matter has in many ways governed our lives. The Industry, at one time, employed more people in this general locality (within 30 miles of Radstock)than in any other part of the Country outside the confines of London. It remains a significant employer in North Somerset to this day. This Albion Printing Press was manufactured by Henry Watts of London and previously owned and operated by the late Joseph Tanner of Butler & Tanner Ltd (Frome & London). The Press is now situated in a Victorian/Edwardian Print Room at Radstock Museum and is dedicated to the Industry.
