This bronze bust of William Harbutt, the inventor of Plasticine, was made in 1911 by his pupil, Edwin Whitney Smith. Harbutt invented Plasticine for use by students at Bath School of Art where he was head teacher. It became so successful that it was used by artists and children all over the world. This life-size bust was modelled in Plasticine before being cast in bronze. It was given to the Gallery by William Harbutt's wife, Elizabeth.
