Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928) was a Scottish artist, designer and architect. When he married his wife Margaret Macdonald in 1900 he designed many new pieces of furniture for their new home together.
One of these new designs was this striking white writing desk with silvered copper panels designed and made by Margaret. The silver panels show six almost plant-like female figures, representing old and new styles of writing.
The painted oak desk has deep side cupboards and various internal shelves and storage sections. Mackintosh had a great interest in nature and this greatly influenced a lot of his designs, as you can see by the organic shaped carved mouldings on the front of the desk.
This object from the collection of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery was selected by Monica Callaghan who created the Mackintosh House Relic Challenge.
