The force pump was discovered during the archaeological excavations at Tarrant Hinton. It was found at the bottom of a well in the Roman villa courtyard. The pump may have been in use from the 2nd century until the late 4th century. The pump would have forced water from the bottom of the well up to ground level and then into a tank where the water could be stored for later use in the villa, or the nearby bath house.
