Mice were a frequent problem in the Georgian kitchen and this type of mousetrap was very popular for a long time although it is difficult to see how effective it was. The main block would be lifted to set the trap and bait placed underneath. When the mouse took the bait it trod on the bar inside which connects with a lever and releases the heavy block on top of the mouse.
