My Mother's Suitcase

My Mother's Suitcase

This is the suitcase my mother was carrying when she was forced to leave Nazi Germany in 1939. I have a photo of her with the suitcase at the railway station as she says goodbye to her mother and aunts. She never saw them again.

My mother loved this country but until the day she died (1995) she kept this suitcase under the bed, ready to leave - just in case...

It has made me think that the repercussions of historical events stretch far into the future and even touch those not directly affected by them. I was born in the UK but psychologically I have a suitcase ready - just in case...

I love this posting. Thank you. It fires my imagination! I'd love to see the photograph of your mother holding it at the railway station - and to know who took that photograph!?
