Alamein Scrapbook

Contributed by EACH Project

This scrapbook once belonged to the Alamein club at El Gezira, set up in 1942 for the recreation of Allied personnel stationed in Egypt. The book contains photographs and press cuttings about the site and the events held there. It provides a fascinating insight into soldiers recreation when out of the lines with organised sporting events, athletics, concerts, a library, swimming pool and theatrical performances recorded. There was considerable friendly rivalry between units and countries on the sports fields with special events set up on key occaisions such as Empire day; on this day there were international tournaments held between the nations under Imperial control stationed nearby.
