This enamel sign originally hung outside a corner shop at the junction of Stepney Lane and Nicholson Street in Hull. Enamel was an extremely hard-wearing medium for advertising signs - virtually immune to either vandalism or the weather. Paraffin was widely used for domestic heating up to the 1960s, being cleaner, safer and easier to use than an open fire. Major and Company were based at the junction of Fountain Road and Wincolmlee, also in Hull.

Hi. Loved the sign. I'm a member of the Historic Lighting Club, currently compiling a small booklet about Enamel Paraffin Advertising Signs. Who should I approach to get permission for using a picture of this sign, with background details and acknowledgement of sources? Dietzman
