Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928) was a Scottish artist, designer and architect. He designed this delicate clock as part of a set with a writing cabinet and chair, for Walter Blackie at The Hill House in Helensburgh.
Walter Blackie was a successful Glasgow publisher, who commissioned Mackintosh to design a house including the garden and interiors. This was The Hill House.
This is Mackintosh's version of the clock. It sat on the mantelpiece in the drawing room of his own home. It is made from ebonised wood and stained sycamore, with delicate lines of ivory inlay along the edges of the clock face. The numbers for the hours have been carefully painted in roman numerals. Even the tiny sections marking the minutes have been included, helping to create a circular pattern on the clock face.
The square face is supported on slender, free-standing columns. The appearance of the base changes as you look at the columns from different angles.
This object from the collection of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery was selected by Monica Callaghan who created the Mackintosh House Relic Challenge.
