PIT HEAD CAGE. A double-decked pit cage c.1820 used at Huish Pit, Radstock. This, an early example of such a cage, is an indication of the real progress in mining technology in the C19th. Prior to this miners had to cling perilously to the pit rope or sit in a basket to be lowered or to ascend from the pit. The colliery pit head cage marked an improvement in safety and productivity in coalmining. In addition to the safer carriage of men the cage was also able to raise fully laden coal tubs.
