The Georgian Passage is the newest section of the Underground Passages system. It was built along the line of a 1640s defensive ditch and is the only part of the Passages to be built from brick rather than stone. Because it was the newest section, it was used as an air raid shelter in 1942 that could house up to 300 people. Much of the city above was destroyed but the Passages escaped with very minimal damage. The entire Underground Passages system is owned and operated by Exeter City Council.
