This is an early oil engine from the Blackstone engineering factory in Stamford. A major employer in the Town for over 100 years, it finally closed after the last casting from the foundry in 2002.
The original company founded by Henry Smith in 1837 became Rutland Ironworks then after a series of changes and the arrival of Edward Blackstone the company was renamed Blackstone and Co Ltd and was sited on the eastern edge of Stamford.Two engineering brothers,Frank and Evershed Carter joined the company in 1896 and their oil engines became the mainstay of the company. Their early oil engines developed into high speed diesel engines and marine engines.
