The medal, The Sure Shield, was presented to Walter Hutton to mark his service during the First World War. Mr Hutton served on the LNER steamers, sailing between Grimsby,Rotterdam and Hamburg. According to his grand-daughter, Mrs J Clarke, he was involved in the shipping of ammunition to the troops on the Western Front. He also transported many Jewish emigrants on the first leg of their journey to the USA.
