Hotels that installed a gas fire in guest bedrooms had these meters fitted so that the occupants had to pay to use the fire. They could do so by putting a sixpence in this meter which would give them four or five hours of heat This was purchased from the Carrick Gas Works and used in Dobbins Hotel situated in High Street, Carrickfergus.
