Although born into slavery, African American Nancy Burns (1800-1849) - ultimately obtained her freedom. Lifelong maid to Catherine Beck, Nancy moved with Catherine on her marriage to Pierre Van Cortlandt. Highly valued by the family, they commissioned a portrait of Nancy wearing the headscarf that is also displayed at the Museum. Nancy Burns' tombstone reads: "A faithful nurse, a true friend, an humble Christian - in token of their affection and gratitude...by C.E.V.C. and her children."
