Meccano was made by Frank Hornby in Liverpool from 1908 until the early 1960's. While it was not the first construction toy - it was one of the first to use elements such as regularly spaced holes for bolts and axles. This No 10 set was a post war re-release and marked the return to full production for Meccano after the war-time suspension of production (so that the factory could join the war effort).
This Meccano set was on display in the window of a Scunthorpe toyshop. It was bought by a friend of the owner's father and passed on to him when that friend passed away. It was passed to the current owner after his father's death. The set has never been used and the original string ties and tissue paper are intact.
Hornby ceased production of Meccano in the early 1960's with UK production at the famous Liverpool factory ceasing in 1978.
